What is Cisco Umbrella?

Cisco Umbrella is a cloud security platform that provides the first line of defence against threats on the internet, wherever users go. With Cisco Umbrella, your customers can stop phishing and malware infections earlier, identify already infected devices faster, and prevent data exfiltration. Umbrella performs everything in the cloud with 100% uptime since 2006 and no hardware to install or software to manually update.

Where does Umbrella fit into a network's security?

Your customers probably have a range of products deployed at their corporate headquarters and branch offices, or on roaming laptops. There are many ways that malware can penetrate their networks, which is why it's important to have multiple layers of security. Umbrella serves as the first layer of defense against threats by preventing devices from connecting to malicious or likely malicious sites in the first place-which significantly reduces the chance of malware infiltrating your customer's network or endpoints.

How does Umbrella Work?

Umbrella uses DNS as one of the main mechanisms to direct traffic to its cloud platform, and then uses it to enforce security too. DNS is a foundational component of how the internet works and is used by every device in the network. Umbrella operates in the DNS to stop threats over all ports and protocols - even direct-to-IP connections.

When Umbrella receives a DNS request, it first identifies which customer the request came from, and which policy to apply.

Umbrella
determines if the request is:
Action
Safe or whitelisted Route the connection as usual
Malicious or blacklisted Route the connection to a block page
Unknown or risky Route the connection to our cloud-based proxy for deeper inspection

While traditional web proxies examine all internet requests adding latency and complexity for their users, Umbrella sends only the partially malicious or suspicious domains for review. In this way, Umbrella users don't experience the same performance issues.
